On loan Hull defender Will Aimson is known as a centre back, but Neil McDonald’s decision to position him in defensive midfield paid off against Wigan on Saturday.
Aimson had a tough game against Wigan in the previous clash between the two sides, playing in the middle of defence in a 4-0 defeat. However Aimson fulfilled his role of shielding the defence in Pool’s 1-0 defeat of Wigan to great success on Saturday.
Neil McDonald told the official site: ‘They might have thought we were playing three at the back, especially with Will being on the team sheet. They played one-up front and Will shielded that really well and stopped the source. When we got the ball he passed it really well and it set us off in open play.’
Aimson could be used in a similar role in the future for tough away games given his good performance last time out.
