With Algeria having qualified for this year’s World Cup and Malawi being ranked 99th in the world, the smart money was on Algeria and Blackpool’s Hamuer Bouazza beginning their African Nations Cup campaign with a bang on Monday afternoon.

However, Malawi upset all the odds against a lacklustre Algeria by winning 3-0.

Bouazza came on for the last fifteen minutes, but by then it was already 3-0 and game over.

Like most of the Algeria team, Bouazza worked hard, but ultimately had no end product.

It’ll be interesting to see if he gets a start in their next game, although it is worth noting that Algeria’s system does not suit him – they play a narrow diamond in midfield.

Algeria’s next game is a key clash against a talented and spirited Mali side tomorrow evening, who fought back from 4-0 down in their first game against Angola to draw 4-4.

It is very possible that if Algeria lose that then they will be eliminated in the group stage, and whilst we wish Hamuer all the best, it would be nice to have him back earlier than expected!
