Blackpool in Latvia

Simon Grayson`s Blackpool team flew out to Latvia this morning from Liverpool`s John Lennon airport (EasyJet anyone?) and will play three games in the space of five days; in the homeland of Valeri Belokon and Kaspars Gorkss before returning home ready to face Wigan next Wednesday!

The Seasiders are to be based in Ventspils and will compete against FC Olimps (tomorrow), Ventspils – champions of the Latvian league – (Saturday) and finish off against Skonto Riga on Monday.

It is widely expected that most of the 25 players will play a part regularly throughout the tour. One player that won`t be turning out in tangerine is Wes Hoolahan, who, despite travelling with the squad (good news surely?) won`t be eligible to play.

FIFA are to announce a decision on the saga that is Hoolahan`s transfer to Blackpool on Friday, and early indications are good that the Irish winger will be joining the Bloomfield Road club – despite rumours stating he had been shown around various Championship grounds over proposed moves.

There has been no word on whether or not the club have taken over any trialists, although there will be plenty of opportunity to watch any possible players on returning to England.

The last of those fixtures will be the hardest, then the football gets real!

I think Larry’s moved on from taking Trialists on from lower leagues – ala Tom Cahill and that right back, god only knows what his name was…can never remember!
With the current squad – the 25 that have gone over I believe will be the team that we will use this year, with even Phil Doughty getting a run out I think/hope – I think we’ve got strength in depth that we haven’t had in quite some time. We’re better off than last season IMO.
We just need Wes, another left winger, another right winger and possibly another striker. But none are vital – other than Wes!!
