Blackpool successfully defeated Blyth Spartans 2-0 in Neil McDonald’s 2nd game in charge of the Tangerines. Young midfielder Connor Oliver and ex Derby and St Mirren striker Callum Ball got the goals.
The focus before the match was on how the Blackpool supporters would conduct themselves after two previous pitch invasions, but the match went without interference and no problems arose and the game of football was played out in full. Pool set up in a 4-4-2 formation with Jack Redshaw and Mark Cullen starting together up front. Winger Jarrett Rivers captained the seasiders on his return to his former club whilst two trialists also featured, experienced defender Kevin McNaughton and ex Derby striker Callum Ball.
Pool found it tricky at the start of the game and Blyth gave them a lot to think about but Pool were able to turn things around on 21 minutes when Connor Oliver poked the ball past Blyth keeper Adam McHugh after some great work from Bright Osayi-Samuel.
Half time saw McDonald introduce 5 new players including trialist Callum Ball with Henry Cameron and Luke Higham being introduced soon after. Ball added to the lead on 67 minutes after Osayi-Samuel’s cross was parried by keeper McHugh right into the path of the striker who had an easy finish.
Blackpool still have a long way to go before the season starts, new additions must be made to the squad in order to strengthen and give McDonald more options. However the boss will be pleased that he has made a winning start to his life as Blackpool manager. The match was also finished without any outside interference which can be considered a positive for the manager and players who will be keen to experience a full pre-season in order to compete in League One next year.
