It was a winning for Blackpool in League 2 on Saturday when Exeter were beaten in our first match at this level since 2001.
This was also the first match Gary Bowyer was in charge for with a number of players making Blackpool debuts, including one of the goalscorers Kyle Vassell who carried on after his impressive pre-season form.
Bowyer told the Official Website he would have ‘taken that’ before kick-off when reflecting on the two-nil win.
‘We certainly would have taken that before the start of play today. It was a very difficult game against an experienced team in Exeter that have been together a long time. We’re still in the first early stages of a new relationship, it’s taken us six weeks to get to where we are now and it’s a start.’
Looking at the performance of Vassell, along with youngsters Bright Osayi-Samuel and Brad Potts, he added.
‘He’s been tremendous. He took his goal well because he had a long time to think about it and it seemed like an eternity before it dropped in to the net. It was a great bit of play from him. I thought Bright was terrific for us in the first-half, his pace puts teams on the back foot. Pottsy put in a couple of tremendous balls and got on the end of one and maybe should have scored. The wide men did tremendously well today.’
Obviously injury setbacks to Danny Philliskirk, Potts and a knock for Vassell weren’t wanted so we’ll have to wait and see what happens when we face Bolton in the EFL Cup on Tuesday.
Ahead of that he finished by saying.
‘With what we’ve seen today on the injury front, we’ve got to make sure that we’re right and we look after people if we need to.’
Vassell, who arrived from Peterborough in the summer, was delighted with his goal but happier with the win.
Also, when talking to the Official Website, saying we can’t get carried away by it with work to be done.
‘We beat a good Exeter team but the Gaffer`s right, we shouldn`t get carried away,” said Vassell. I`m delighted with the goal, clean sheet and victory but there`s plenty of hard work that still needs to be done.’
