Bowyer – We Didn’t Do Enough

Manager Gary Bowyer has expressed his anger at Blackpool’s performance in the defeat to Grimsby Town at the weekend.

Hosting the side at Bloomfield Road for the game, Bowyer was upbeat ahead of the match but falling to a three one defeat he knew the performance on the day had been no where near good enough and he had criticism over all three goals we conceded on the day.

Speaking to the Official Site as he met with the media in his post game press conference, he bemoaned the fact that the players hadn’t done enough with or without the ball on the day.

‘It was simply not good enough today, which is probably the first time we’ve been as honest and as brutal as that. They’re three goals that we’ve gifted Grimsby and that’s what we have done, we’ve gifted them. They’ve not had to work hard for them, they’re real, real soft goals and I’m majorly disappointed with how we’ve been today.’

Building on the ‘soft goals’ conceded, he went on to say.

‘The first goal is a poor goal. I thought in the first-half we put one or two decent passages of play together, the goalie made a good save from a great move when Jack Payne has played it to Colin and he’s set Brad Potts up. To get ourselves back in at 1-1 and with a minute to go again, the manner of that goal was horrific in terms of the foul that we gave away that led to the corner and then defending the actual corner was really disappointing. We came out and had a little bit of a huff and a puff, the goalie has made decent saves from Kyle Vassell, Bright and Jordan Flores and Dean has not had a save to make. Then we go and gift them a third.’

With the game statistics showing we had exactly the same number of chances as the visitors both on and off target, we did boss possession and that was another frustration for Bowyer as we didn’t make it count.

‘We’ve had a lot more possession than the opposition again but we’ve not took enough care with the ball today. There was a lot of simple passes to be made and we didn’t execute them right. We’ve got to go back to basics and work ever so hard to put it right for Friday. There’s competition for places and people have got to go and put a case forward in training all week now to play in that Accrington game. There has to be a reaction.’

He ended by saying.

‘The one compliment, if that’s the word, or bit of praise you can give them is that at the end of the game they’ve had a meeting themselves before I get in the dressing room. They’re digging each other out, and when you’ve got a group like that, finally taking responsibility and accountability, it gives you something to build on in the lead up to the game on Friday.’
