Manager Lee Clark has said he was proud of the efforts of the players in our FA Cup third round defeat to Aston Villa.

A late goal from Christian Benteke ending our involvement in the Cup, but the gaffer told the Official Site that he couldn’t be anything but proud given how close we pushed the Premier League side.

‘I can only praise my team, I thought the players were outstanding. We restricted Aston Villa to very few chances and we were a threat on the break. There were some good performances out there. My old team mate has been one of the outstanding performers. Shay Given. He’s been busier that Joe and made two terrific saves. We deserved at least a replay.’

Clark went on to say that the players had thoroughly enjoyed themselves but were obviously disappointed to have lost it so late on the day because we know we came close to being one of the shock results of the FA Cup weekend.

Now though it’s back to league action and a tough game against Millwall.

‘Next weekend’s game is even more important than this one. It’s bigger, I’m seeing lots of positives that can give us optimism for the second part of the season and us achieving what we want to do.’

Clark ends by saying that in the early part of the week, he will be sitting down with the chairman to try and get deals for a few new faces sorted before next weekend, but he knows everybody should take a lot of positives from the Villa showing and we should go back to Championship action with more confidence.
