Early season points

Blackpool’s record on the opening day of the season down the years has been awful. There have been 2-0 defeats at Doncaster and Bristol City, a 5-0 thumping at QPR and a 3-1 home reverse against Chesterfield to name but a few.

But last season Pool bucked the trend of defeats with a fine 1-0 success at Leicester. Those three points turned out to be absolutely crucial at the end of the season as the Foxes were relegated. But what lies in store this August?

In our latest poll you’ve been voting on when our first win of the new season will arrive. And 58% of you are confident that Pool will win on the opening day for the second year running.

Gary Johnson’s Bristol City visit Bloomfield Road in what looks to be a tough test for the Tangerines. A play-off hangover after losing to Hull at Wembley could give Pool the edge in this tricky start.

30% of you reckon the trip to Macclesfield in the Carling Cup will provide Pool with a first win of the season. And 4% of voters think we will have to wait until August 23rd and the visit of Sheffield United to secure a first victory.

Last season Pool made an excellent start to the season, winning three and drawing one of their first five games in all competitions. But that was on the back of the perfect ten and play-off glory. That momentum will not be with us come this August making this year’s start an even sterner test.

In our latest poll we ask you how much Pool will miss Wes Hoolahan following the Irishman’s move to Norwich City.

Interesting. Maybe a big win is in order on the first day of this coming season then.

With first up being a home game its very important to get off to a good start. I think Bristol City may have a play off hangover after last season and struggle in 08/09.
