Fan Thoughts: Wigan Athletic

Vital Wigan editor, Worbo, gives us his thoughts ahead of tomorrow’s game between the Latics and ‘Pool.



– Aspirations for the season?

I hope that we can kick on from last season and build on our good performances, a finish anywhere from 14th – 10th would be fantastic with a run in one of the cups thrown in for good measure.

We played Villa and then Chelsea off the park at the start of last season showing how good we can be, but we must cast aside our dark performances where we just caved in, do that and there is hope for a good season this time out.


– Now, realistic thoughts…

I would hope we will improve on last season; Roberto Martinez has had a year in charge, shipped out most of the players he inherited from Steve Bruce and brought in his own men, I would think a realistic aim would be 14th


– Thoughts on Blackpool’s rise?

Absolutely fantastic, got to the top on a small budget, that will give lots of inspiration to all the League 1 and League 2 sides, very similar to when we first made the top flight back in 2005, you’ve got yourselves a great manager in Holloway who isn’t afraid to upset the system or the big boys, should be an interesting season at Bloomfield Road.


– How likely is it that it’ll be a quick fall?

Unfortunately I think it will be a tough season, I really would love for Blackpool to stay up for quite a few reasons, but, I’m sure you’ve already heard this many times, I don’t think there is enough quality in your squad to keep you up. I hope I am wrong but you’re my tip for relegation.


– Your main danger?

Hugo Rodallega, Mauro Boselli and Charles N’Zogbia, a three pronged strike force that would terrorise many a defence when on song, I am hoping that they aren’t flat on Saturday.


– Paul Scharner, what happened? Always liked him.

The Scharnernater has moved onto pastures new, well he hasn’t actually got himself fixed up with a club yet so he’s available if Holloway is looking for a centre half who thinks he’s a midfield man.

Scharner was superb for us, we signed him as a defender, but he always wanted to play in the middle, he let his contract expire even though there was an offer of an extension on the table, he said it was time to move on, good luck to him, great character and good servant to the Latics.


– Cliché I know, but a prediction…

I am going for a 2-0 home win for the Latics, you`ll find us totally different from the side that faced you last season in the Carling Cup, well at least I hope so!
