Former Oldham captain Will Haining has joined Blackpool on trial and goes straight into the squad for tonight’s friendly at Carlisle.

The 6ft central defender left St. Mirren at the end of last season after making almost 50 appearances for the club in two seasons.

And after that brief spell in Scotland, he looks set to ply his trade in England once again.

The Seasiders are in need of a new defender after the sale of Shaun Barker to Derby County for £1m.

It was thought that Neal Eardley would be the man to replace Barker, with right back Alex John-Baptiste being moulded as a centre half but taking Haining on trial might indicate a change of tact from the manager.

‘Pool have confirmed their squad for the game this evening, which includes two other trialists who both played in the 1-1 draw at Rochdale on Saturday, but no new signings.
