Flynn starting his career at Newport County but made himself known to Wigan scoring 40 goals in two seasons for Barry Town. A £15k move to Wigan only resulted in a more appearances from the bench then starts. In 2004 Pool brought Flynn in for 7 matches on loan, he impressed but no permanent deal was on the cards with then Pie Munchers boss Paul Jewell recalling the midfielder.

A move to Gillingham proved successful, 105 appearances and being named captain in his second year. He moved this summer to Blackpool to play in the Championship, but is this the league to high for the 27-year-old and where does he fit in?

From last nights display Flynn showed what he`s all about, he`s got the tough tackling side of the game we see from Southern. He mixed it up with Landzaat in the middle winning the ball and putting in a few tough tackles, well tough for a friendly match.

He has the ability to get forward, a couple of runs from the middle of the park last night and a volley over the bar from out side the box. He scored 12 goals last season making him the Gills top scorer; he would have been the fourth top scorer at Bloomfield with that haul. 12 goals in a season is a massive asset to have in the team from the middle, this adds our style of play we were used to last season which resulted in us being the leagues top scorers.

For me, Flynn is at his best passing the ball around the middle, he`s got a great first touch will allows him to be open to options, and he`s not one to pass backwards, he`s always looking to go forward (remember Lee Collins, didn`t know how to pass up the field!). His good touch also helps to get out of sticky situations, a couple of times against Wigan he was able to get away from a couple of opposition players and pass to a team mate when it looked more likely that he was going to loose possession.

So he`s a good tackler, he can get forward to score goals and he`s comfortable on the ball, but where should he play and who with?

In the middle of the park is a must, he can play out wide but we have better options and he would be wasted out there. He played last night along side Jorgensen in the middle who is a similar player so would be best suited with some different. Foxy likes to hold back a little and be the pin point in the middle moving play from side to side. Bean doesn`t look like being a first team regular, anyone who saw the shot that went over the north stand, yes the north stand, would agree.

So the final option is Southern, and it`s Southern who I would pair him up with. They`re similar in the two are strong and tough tackling but Southern is able to get back quick covering the back four which should allow Flynn to go forward. Some people do have doubts about Southern`s ability to step up to Championship level and that he`ll struggle for a place in the starting line up.

It all depends on injuries and the remaining pre-season games to decide which two will be in the middle of the park come the first game of the season in August against Leicester but for me the first name on the team sheet already is Michael Flynn
