It’s no secret that Blackpool have struggled for goals recently. The last five games have seen the Tangerines lose without scoring and they now sit 22nd in the League One table.
Whilst defensive fragility is having an impact, what’s really impacting this Blackpool side is their lack of ability to score.
Admittedly, Blackpool under Neil McDonald have never adopted a ‘it doesn’t matter how many you score, because we’ll score more’ approach, like we famously saw under Ian Holloway. But the side were scoring enough to get results and that’s all that mattered.
The 4-3 loss against Bury a few weeks ago was obviously down to a poor defensive display, nevertheless going away to one of the top sides in the league and losing by a goal after not losing in the previous six meant I wasn’t too worried, I remained optimistic and had hope Blackpool would soon return to form.
The Bury game was of course disappointing, but I, like many others, remember thinking that surely a side capable of 3 goals away from home at a play off side won’t get relegated?
But of course things have changed quickly and Pool are seriously struggling now. Take the previous loss to Southend, Pool conceded once and whilst still disappointing, conceding one isn’t enough to prevent you from getting a result.
Blackpool lost that game because they wasted key chances. Andy Little and Mark Cullen, who has been in poor form recently, didn’t put the ball in the net when they should have and when you don’t score, you don’t win games.
McDonald’s signing of Andy Little looked promising as he had a good forty minutes at Southend but unluckily he was injured and had to be substituted and will now likely miss some games.
Pool must get back to scoring ways if they’re to make a go of surviving this season. The last five games have been dreadful but results against Port Vale and Fleetwood in the next two could lift them.
Sadly though, this doesn’t look likely at the moment.
