Manager Gary Bowyer has been speaking about his frustration following the loss to Accrington Stanley at the weekend.
Making the trip to the Crown Ground for the game, Blackpool were a goal to the good following Michael Cain’s strike just under ten minutes from the full time whistle, but the side threw it away late on as the hosts hit back a minute from full time from the penalty spot and then added a winner four minutes into stoppage time.
Speaking to the Official Site in his post game press conference, Bowyer’s frustration was only made worse by the disallowed goal and the controversial manner of the penalty awarded against us.
‘I’ve got to be careful with my choice of words because I don’t want to get in trouble with the referees. We’re winning 1-0 and we’ve already scored a good goal, which the video shows is onside, so the linesman got that one wrong. We still get another goal with the free-kick and then obviously the big turning point is the penalty that nobody else in the ground saw. If anything it is a foul on Tom Aldred. That gives them a lifeline, but then the lack of effort from one or two to stop their winner is incredible.’
At that point he’d have taken the draw, but our heads dropped and they got a lift.
‘We take the point, even though we’ve been on the end of some wrong decisions, but to not track your runners at the end is appalling. It comes down to natural effort and desire to be a winner and make sure you don’t lose.’
He ended by saying.
‘That’s where we’re just at at this moment in time. You can say all you like about the officials – and we have been done – but that doesn’t excuse the winner in the last 20 seconds. You have to go to the 96th, 97th, 98th minute or whatever they decide to add.’
Kelvin Mellor was also interviewed at the full time whistle and he knew Blackpool had to see games out better in the future.
‘I think the game would have been killed off if we`d have got the second one, but we needed to see the one out and didn`t. We need to learn from it and take it on to next week and make sure it doesn`t happen again. It`s game management, we know we made mistakes throughout the game and they capitalised in the last ten minutes and went on to score twice.’
