Dean Lyness marked his first appearance for Blackpool since suffering injury with a couple of penalty saves against Doncaster to book Pools a place in the third round of the Checkatrade Trophy on Tuesday.
Gary Bowyer had given the former Burton keeper the nod for his first involvement following his six-week enforced absence and he didn’t disappoint!
After a 1-1 draw at the Keepmoat Stadium this game went immediately to a penalty shootout, which happens in this competition, saving from Jordan Houghton and Will Longbottom.
These saves saw Blackpool to victory against the League 1 side. After this Lyness actually admitted he was ‘fuming’ with himself at not saving more, he told Official Website.
‘We`re doing well in the cup competitions so credit to the boys, we all turned up and did the job. I was fuming because I thought I should have done better with a couple (of penalties). It`s luck of the draw and thankfully I went the right way and managed to get to a couple of them.’
Lyness was quick to share the credit around saying the changes the boss had made shows the strength in depth at the club after this victory, adding.
‘Especially first-half we were excellent and it was great to get the job done in the end. It was frustrating to concede the goal so soon after half-time, but we reacted well, dug in when we needed to and showed some good character. We`ve almost got two different elevens. We made a lot of changes tonight and it shows the strength in depth we`ve got. Everyone`s ready to come in when needs be.’
