MIB – Marriner & Jones

After a mixture of results in the last week, The Seasiders have lost and won a game with Mr Jones and Andre Marriner as the man in black, who refereed the Barnsley defeat and Burnley win respectively.

We’ll start with Marriner, the Premiership official, who oversaw the 3-0 demolition of local rivals The Clarets; what did our members think of his performance?

Officiating his third Blackpool game in a year, and with an MIB rating of 2.2 before the game, these comments (although only a sample) ensued his showing at Bloomfield Road on New Year’s Day:

‘I’m never suprised anymore how these so called ‘elite’ officials manage to try and ruin a game.
Whistle happy, missed loads, booked Gorkss unnecessarily, and had to rely on liners for help when he was closer than they were.’

‘He was not the worst we have had so far i think so on that basis 3 off me’
Hatchet man

‘3 for me.

Booked Gorkss for very little yet heavy or nasty challanges (from both sides at times) went unpunished.

I felt he should have booked Lafferty early on as well for acting like a petulant schoolboy and stamped a bit of authority on the game. As it was, he didnt and didnt really show great control either.

That said, he let the passage of play run where there were 5 or 6 hard tackles in a row. Many referees may have stopped that.’

‘Middle of the range 3 for me – you could tell that he was a Premiership ref, but saying that he didn’t exactly dazzle.’
Abel

‘4 from me.

The 2 worst tackles were both given yellow cards (the 2 Burnley players) and Gorks I would think was given for persistent fouling and not that one challenge. Gorks does have a style that he is very close to the other player when he goes up for a header, and yesterday gave a way a few free kicks.

The 2 free kicks that Burnley got near the 18yard box were both a bit soft.’

Adding up all the ratings, Marriner ended up with a score of 2.8, and thus accumulates a rating of 2.5 overall, and stays where he is in 14th place.

Mr Jones, who oversaw the 2-1 FA Cup defeat away at Barnsley on Saturday, didnt get such a welcome score. Joint bottom of the MIB table before the game, Jones did little to get out of the bottom few, but just scraped it and improved on his overall rating of erm… 1.

His Barnsley rating was 1.6, which gives him an overall score of 1.3 – which lifts him only a few places in the table.
