At the start of the month I stressed the importance of Blackpool having a good December and whilst 2 wins this month is a good return, there is still much work ahead for McDonald’s Seasiders.
Wins against Wigan and Peterborough were fantastic given that both sides are play off hopefuls and two clean sheets in those fixtures gave cause for optimism.
However, a Boxing Day cancellation against struggling Oldham was very disappointing given that Pool had won their last three and were hoping for a victory which would have seen them climb the table further.
Had Blackpool won that game and then lost against Barnsley yesterday then things wouldn’t been have bad.
However, Pool now only sit two points above the relegation zone and whilst McDonald’s men have shown they are capable of surviving, they haven’t quite shown the quality to climb up to mid table and will remain in a relegation fight this season.
Strengthening of the squad is needed in January with loan players set to leave but whether investment will come or not is doubtful.
I believe that the current squad is capable of staying up under Neil McDonald, but survival in league one shouldn’t be a target for a club with so much money available to them. Blackpool shouldn’t be where they currently are.
