On this day 1952 – the FA Cup
On this day 8 December in 1952, Blackpool were in the third round FA cup draw. The draw generated a lot of interest as the big clubs from the top two divisions were added into the pot.
Twelve ties had already been fixed when Blackpool had been drawn away to Sheffield Wednesday. Joe smith then blackpool manager commented after the draw ‘give us a good referee, a referee who can protect the footballer and we can win’
Blackpool then went on to feature in 7 FA Cup games that season. Lifting the FA cup in the famous Matthews final. – the third round blackpool beat Sheffield Wednesday 2-1.
