Portsmouth have this afternoon finally completed the signing of Derby County’s forward Luke Varney for an undisclosed fee believed to be in the region of £750,000.

The 28 year old of course spent last season on loan at Blackpool, scoring five goals in 30 appearances.

And the player stated his desire to move to Bloomfield Road permanently just a few weeks ago, but it is believed that the Seasiders elected not to take up their option to sign the player permanently for £250,000 after failing to reach agreement with Varney on wages (‘Reggie’ was believed to be on around £15,000 a week at Pride Park).

Varney has signed a three year deal with the South coast club.

Meanwhile, several media outlets are reporting that Portsmouth are now set to bid for another former ‘Pool loanee – Jason Puncheon.

Puncheon impressed in the second half of the season on loan from Southampton, but it is believed his wages would also prevent the Seasiders from signing him permanently.
