Blackpool favourite Alan Suddick has sadly passed away.
The 64-year-old, who made 310 appearances for The Seasiders, lost his battle with cancer which was further complicated by an infection.
The midfielder, signed for a club record fee of £63,000 by Ron Suart in 1966, notched an impressive 65 goals in tangerine, and was hailed ‘King of Bloomfield Road’ by the Kop end.
He is perhaps best remembered for his ability to curl a football – the first of his generation to do so – and supporters still talk about him to this day. A freekick magician, what we would give for someone of his quality at a deadball situation now.
A part of the the hall of fame at Bloomfield Road for his role in the 1970’s – along with the likes of Walsh and Hutchinson – Suddick up until recently regulary watched the ‘Pool, where he is adored by fans.
He also played at a high level with Newcastle United before he eventually signed at the seaside – ending his career at lower league teams.
Alan’s brother-in-law Marcus Polakovs told The Gazette this morning that he passed away surrounded by his family.
‘Alan passed away peacefully in his sleep last night.
‘The family are all devastated by his death after a brave fight by Alan. We are all trying to come to terms with his death now.’
The Blackpool great saw his finest hour in Rome, playing in the Anglo-Italian Cup Final in 1971, where he ripped Bologna to pieces as The Seasiders won the trophy 2-1 in extra time.
Gone, but definitely not forgotten – Alan Suddick.
