Manager Gary Bowyer has now announced the skipper for the coming League Two campaign of 2016/17.
With it known that Bowyer would be making his decision this week having earlier spoken about having had a few candidates as options for the role, today, ahead of tomorrow’s kick off against Exeter, he confirmed to the Official Site that it would be experienced midfielder Danny Pugh.
The 33 year old joined us this summer from Bury and boasts over 300 career games with sides like Stoke City and Leeds United, and Bowyer said it was a difficult decision with others equally being suited, but he felt Pugh was the best choice as he reflected on matters.
‘It wasn’t easy, there were some other great candidates – Andy Taylor, Tom Aldred and Jim McAlister – but we’ve gone with Danny. He’s a great example for everybody here in terms of how he conducts himself both on and off the pitch. He’s vastly experienced and has been there, seen it and done it. I’ve been very impressed with him ever since he’s been in the building. We’re delighted that he’s our captain and hopefully he can get us off to a winning start tomorrow.’
Left back Andy Taylor has been named our vice skipper for the coming year as well.
