Relegation Mix Bag

Today was a bit of a mix bag results wise in truth. We know not a lot more as to who is going to be playing in League One next season as most of the bottom half completed their fixtures this afternoon.

The early kick off in The Championship saw Sheffield Wednesday score an equaliser just after half time through Ben Sahar away at Scunthorpe to earn a draw and jump a point clear of the relegation zone.

However, a surprise 2-0 win for Southampton at home to Bristol City (who look as though they could bottle it again) meant they jumped out of the drop zone and Barnsley – who play their cup semi-final against Cardiff tomorrow – sink into the bottom three. It will be interesting in the coming weeks to see how The Tykes respond to tomorrow’s game, whatever the result.

Two goals from Scott Vernon helped Colchester beat rivals Ipswich Town, but the three points still leave them 11 points from safety.

Norwich were the only team to climb above Blackpool, with a 2-0 at home to Burnley thanks to goals from Dublin and Ched Evans, and are now probably safe on 52 points.

Leicester, who around 35% of a recent site poll felt would go down, were spanked away at Sheffield United after they had a man sent off after just ten minutes at Bramall Lane – subsequently going one goal behind through James Beattie. The difference between City and The Seasiders (who went a goal and a man down in similar circumstances against United on Boxing Day) was that we ground out a 1-1 draw and they ended up losing 3-0.

Coventry City aren’t out of the mire yet either. Chris Coleman’s men lost away at Watford 2-1 and sit in 18th.

By the look of things, all of the results today has just gone to condense the relegation pack even more, but with a game in hand (albeit against WBA) we should be ok.

Oh, one other thing. Preston were 2-0 up going into stoppage time away at QPR. The match finished 2-2!
