The Saints were second best throughout the encounter at the Hawthorns but took the lead in the second half through Adam Lallana’s fine finish.

But the Baggies scored a deserved equaliser through sub Chris Brunt six minutes from time.

The point moves Southampton level with Leicester with the Foxes’ superior goal difference keeping them above Nigel Pearson’s men.

On the final day Leicester appear to face the hardest game at promotion hopeful’s Stoke while Southampton take on play-off chasing Sheffield United.

Sheffield Wednesday, a point behind Pool, host Norwich and Coventry visit Charlton.

All of which means the only realistic way Pool could go down is by Leicester and Southampton winning and Wednesday and Coventry avioding defeat. This would also be assuming Pool lose to Watford. And with the visitors struggling to secure their play-off spot, it is to be hoped the Seasiders can take advantage of their opponents’ recent poor form.

On a more positive note, Pool’s youth team lifted the Lancashire FA Youth Cup at Bloomfield Road last night.

Pool’s under 18s beat Wigan 2-0 thanks to goals from Jake Hobbs and Alex Smith.

Coached by former Pool player Gary Parkinson, the youth team won the trophy for the third time. Captain Ashton Bayliss lifted the trophy to cap a great season for the defender who has signed professional terms with the club.

Fans will get the chance to congratulate the lads at Sunday’s game against Watford when they will parade the cup around the pitch.
