Teams that have been relegated from the Championship in their second season.

2007/08 – Colchester

2006/07 – Luton Town

2005/06 – Brighton

2004/05 – all teams survived their second season.

2003/04 – all team survived their second season.

2002/03 – all teams survived their second season.

2001/02 – all teams survived their second season.

Judging from the statistics the idea of second season syndrome is a relatively recent happening.
In Luton Town`s first season in the Championship they finished in 10th place but succumbed to relegation in their second season and have since dropped into League Two having suffered being in administration.
And most recently Colchester United had a fine first season at this level finishing in 10th place but promptly flopped to the bottom of the league to go down last season having lost some of their best players (Jamie Cureton and Chris Iwelumo) the previous summer.
We will have our work cut out to put a halt to the pattern emerging over the last three seasons in the Championship. And key to this surely is holding on to our better players as Colchester failed to do and found to their cost.
Let`s hope that gloom and mist surrounding the syndrome keeps well clear of the seaside this coming season and we can enjoy many more years in the top two tiers of English football.

  • Well we at Colchester certainly do know about second season syndrome. We missed Wayne Brown, our centre-back, the most. So keep hold of Kaspars Gorkss!

  • We will stay up,i have no doubt about that aslong as we can keep hold of our players apart from Wes as we already know that he is off

  • With a few players looking like they will be leaving you will certainly need to invest some money.
