Stability The Priority

Saying promotion next season might not be possible isn’t something you want to hear from the manager as a fan is it but in fairness to Neil McDonald, with how things are with Blackpool, it’s realistic this shouldn’t be expected.

A realistic, again and as things stand with little sign they’ll change that dramatically, more likely goal should be simply to remain in League 1 and not slip down the Football League any further!

It goes without saying that McDonald doesn’t want us to be in League 1, but would sooner we remained at that level as opposed to going down again, but he’s told the Blackpool Gazette that consolidation and stability at Bloomfield Road is his priority first and foremost.

That alone will only be possible with the right recruitment, which if we can get that above expectation then you never know….

‘No-one here wants to be in League One but that’s our reality.

‘And if we can progress further up the league or into a good position because of the good recruitment, that’s brilliant.’

McDonald does feel that it would be wrong to ‘set targets’ at the moment with him merely looking towards ‘stepping stones’ at the moment, which will grow with the players, he wanted them to be ‘quality players’ coming in.

Once the recruitment gets underway, and if we can start the season well, that’s when he’ll be setting these targets but has put emphasis on the first job that’s staying in League 1 and do that the work ethic and mentality needs to change.

‘We want to get off to a good start and hit the ground running. If we do that, we’ll set a new target and proceed from there.

‘But mainly it’s about recruiting the players to make sure we are competitive in this league, and winning more games than we are losing.

‘Very rarely do you get a job at a club that’s on the up, and you have to change everyone’s work ethic and way of thinking.’

I don’t want to sound negative, but you’ve got to be realistic, we all know that McDonald’s got quite a job on his hands so if we can simply keep us in League 1 next season that would seem an achievement!

On the topic of League 1, whilst it’s looking less and less likely he’ll join us we could still see Mark Waddington at that level as reports say that should Stoke, as expected, wrap up his signing they’ll loan him to a club at that level.

But it’ll not be us….
