Had it not been for a parting of the ways early into his spell with Derby we would have seen Nigel Pearson facing his former side Leicester. As it is Steve McClaren returned to the iPro Stadium and he’ll look to see his Rams side overcome a Foxes side struggling in the Premier League on Friday.
Saturday’s lunchtime kick off will see Liverpool playing host to Wolves as the Reds look to end a disappointing week that’s seen them lose to Sunderland in the Premier League and exit the League Cup at the semi-final stage. Wolves will seek an upset at Anfield to boost morale and take forward into the Championship.
A number of Premier League clubs will face Football League opposition looking to avoid upsets.
These ties will see Burnley welcome struggling Championship side Bristol City to Turf Moor with Premier League leaders Chelsea at Stamford Bridge against Brentford. League 2 sides looking to cause major upsets are struggling Accrington who head to Middlesbrough and promotion chasing Wycombe when they head to White Hart Lane to face Tottenham.
Championship sides that would be expected to advance are Blackburn when hosting Blackpool – the League 2 side are now under the guidance of former Rovers boss Gary Bower. Non-league side Lincoln saw off Ipswich in the last round with Championship leaders Brighton heading to Sincil Bank. Behind Albion are Newcastle who will travel to Oxford with League 1 promotion chasers Rochdale hosting Huddersfield.
Two all-Premier League ties will see Crystal Palace – who have only won in the FA Cup under Sam Allardyce – hosting Manchester City with the late kick off on Saturday seeing League Cup finalists Southampton hosting Arsenal.
Sunday’s ties will be staggered with Millwall getting the action underway at 12noon when Watford head to the Den. Fulham will host Hull – who missed out on a League Cup final place in midweek – in a game that kicks off half an hour later.
Having seen off Wimbledon in the last round Sutton will look to cause another upset when hosting in-form Leeds.
Rounding off the fourth round ties – original ones anyway – will be League Cup finalists Manchester United’s welcoming of Wigan – who will be mostly focused on Championship survival but will want to cause an upset – to Old Trafford.
It goes without saying the expectation; most definitely the hope at least, will be for a positive result. But will this happen? We’ll find out soon enough.
