Accrington’s outside hopes of making it into the top-seven could be kept a live with a win over Luton, fourth, but even that might not be enough? A point for the Hatters and they’ll be assured of a play-off spot with a game to spare.
Barnet, 15th, can’t finish any higher than their current spot but a win over Grimsby would improve these chances. Technically the Mariners, 14th, can make it into the top-seven but this is highly unlikely with five points to overturn and so many clubs between them and a play-off place.
If Cambridge, 11th, react with a win to last weekend’s defeat in the visit of Crawley to the Abbey the U’s would take their bid to finish in the top-seven into the final weekend. The Reds have only won once in the last 10 games but they can’t be relegated from the Football League.
Carlisle are unbeaten in three but with these ending in draws the Cumbrians, 10th, are a point off the play-off. Newport’s four wins in five has taken them out of the relegation zone – survival will be assured with a victory if second-bottom Hartlepool are beaten.
A Cheltenham point against second-bottom Hartlepool would assure they stay in League 2 and could leave Pools on the brink of dropping out of the Football League? If the visitors leave with all three points it could move them out of the relegation zone and leave the Robins in a potential four-way final day shootout for the one battle to avoid the drop.
Already promoted Doncaster could be confirmed as champions if they record a first win in four, having lost successive games. Exeter go to the Keepmoat Stadium knowing a victory will all but secure a play-off spot – the goal difference means they can’t drop any lower than seventh.
Leyton Orient’s relegation was confirmed last weekend but Orient will still play for pride in the remaining two games – starting with the visit of Colchester. The U’s bid for a top-seven finish will go to the final day if all three points are secured at Brisbane Road.
If Mansfield can follow up the win over Stevenage, seventh, last weekend with another over already promoted Portsmouth it could take them into a play-off spot. Pompey, third, on the other hand can still be crowed champions but would have to win at Field Mill and hope that Doncaster drop point.
Morecambe’s run-in has been poor in recent months but they’ll still be in League 2 next season but Wycombe might not be? A win for the Chairboys, ninth, and they could move into the top-seven leaving a bid for a play-off place in their own hands on the final day.
Notts County bid to avoid a third straight defeat when play-off chasing Blackpool visit Meadow Lane. A Pools win and they could confirm a top-seven finish, be left in a strong position at the very least with a game to play.
If Plymouth can extend their unbeaten run to five games with a win against Crewe – who won for the first time in five last time round – they will go into the final day having a chance of being crowed champions. Depending on Doncaster’s result a point could be enough for the Pilgrims.
Yeovil’s goal difference should mean they’ll stay in the Football League whatever Hartlepool, Newport and Cheltenham manage in the final two games but if the Glovers get anything against Stevenage that’ll make absolutely sure. Boro, seventh, will hold onto the final play-off spot, at least, with a win at Huish Park.
It goes without saying the expectation; most definitely the hope at least, will be for a positive result. But will this happen? We’ll find out soon enough.
