Wayne was signed for Pool by then boss Steve McMahon from Blackburn Rovers. Gill never managed to make the break into the Rovers’ first team, and so was offered regular football by Macca. Just 67 seconds into his debut for the Tangerines Gill scored his first goal for the club. He went on to make 12 appearances, scoring a remarkable 7 goals.

Gill left Pool for Tranmere in May 2000 to team up with John Aldridge at Prenton Park where the Trannies were playing Championship football. Ironically, Gill played alongside Scott Taylor on the wirral.

In October of 2001, Oldham splashed out 70,000 for Gill, however he was released in 2004. Wayne joined Scarborough, who have since gone into liquidation, and played out the rest of his professional playing career with the seadogs.

Since hanging up his boots Wayne has been busy, enrolling on a Physiotherapy course at the University of Salford. He, along with another former Pool player Lee Martin, have shown that there most definitely is a life after football. How refreshing it is to see these honest ex – pros doing something valuable and worthwhile with their lives after their playing days are over.

Wayne will always be fondly remembered by Pool fans for his brief, but hugely successful stint at the Seaside. Oh, and of course we will never forget his shiny bald head!

Next time we track the movements of Martin Bullock since he departed Blackpool.
