On this day, a look back in time to 30th September 1989

On this day in 1989, Bloomfield Road was the first ground in English football where police in full riot gear were required.

Before during and after the game against Birmingham City in the Third Division, there were numerous disturbances which required police intervention, and police were drafted in from all across the Fylde Coast.

During the game away fans started rioting on the old Spion Kop, at the north end of the ground. After a short delay police were able to enter the stand in full riot gear to fully restore order in the away end.
