It took Blackpool 79 minutes to get a midfielder in the Leeds United box, but when they did, Angel Martinez swept home a winner to edge the Seasiders towards a playoff berth.
Good work from Nouha Dicko saw the on-loan striker wriggle his way into the area before his cross found Martinez. In a game where Ian Holloway’s side lacked creative ideas, it was welcome relief.
But the old adage of winning games ugly applies as they came up against a dogged Neil Warnock outfit insistent on spoiling the fixture as a spectacle.
With Middlesbrough slipping up at home to relegated Doncaster – drawing 0-0 – Pool extended their advantage over top six rivals to four points.
The remaining two games will see jockeying for positions, with two-legged ties against either Birmingham City or West Ham United seemingly awaiting.
