The match winner at Bloomfield Road on Saturday, David Norris, has landed himself in some very hot water with the FA. Norris’ goal celebration, after scoring for Ipswich Town against Blackpool, was to make a brief handcuff gesture – in support of the former Plymouth goalkeeper Luke McCormick, who is serving over seven years in jail after causing death by driving under the influence of alcohol. It was at David Norris’ wedding party where McCormick spent the night before the fatal crash.
And this angered the mother of the victims, who were ten and eight.
‘I’m disgusted. To celebrate a goal like that is disrespectful to me and my husband and my boys. He should be given a ban by his club,’ she said.
‘Norris is doing this in front of thousands of supporters, including children, and sending out the wrong message that we can drink and drive and it’s OK to kill someone.’
It is likely that Ipswich Town will take action against the midfielder, whether that be internal or external it is not yet known. The FA this morning have said that they want to speak to Norris about his celebration, and the player maintains that he didn’t set out to cause offence.
Last season, Tim Cahill of Everton made a similar gesture after his brother was jailed for six years on a GBH charge, but he was strongly defended by his club.
An Everton spokesman said ‘Goal celebrations are a personal matter and up to the player to decide.
‘No-one dictates what the player can do as long as he stays within the laws of the game and as long as it doesn’t result in a caution.’
But it seems Norris’ actions have angered many, unlike Cahill’s incident, and this story could run and run.
