Former Blackpool midfielder David Eyres says that he expects his old side to go straight back down this season.

The 46-year-old, who only hung up his playing boots in 2008, thinks the gap between the Championship and Premiership will be a step too far for Ian Holloway’s side after securing promotion in May.

Eyres infamously played for ‘Pool, Burnley and Preston in the 90’s.

We caught up with him at the Mersey Masters on Sunday. Eyres said: ‘Next season Blackpool have got a hell of a struggle. I really doubt they’ve got the money to stay up, but it’ll be interesting to see.

‘Blackpool really need 6 or 7 quality players to compete.

‘As a former player, I really hope they do well. Staying up would be deserved for the hard work they put in last year.’
