Ian Holloway has vowed to mould Blackpool’s record signing Charlie Adam into ‘one heck of a player’ ahead of the Carling Cup second round tie at home to Wigan.

The 23-year-old’s guile and intelligence in and around the box could prove to be key to ‘Pool’s chances of picking up a shock victory on Wednesday night.

‘Teams need a bit of jiggery-pokery around the edge of the box and Charlie Adam has that, he has all sorts of things in his locker,’ said Holloway, talking to the local press.

But the manager clearly knows that Adam is nowhere near the finished article. That is perhaps one of his biggest tasks at Bloomfield Road – to get the best out of the midfielder.

‘I have to get him to select the right thing at the right time.

‘He is a bundle of energy and what I have to do is teach him to have a bit more discipline in his play,’
Holloway continued.

‘But he just has to calm down. He is still excited. He is genuinely excited about being here, which is great.

‘I can’t wait to keep working with him.’

Tomorrow night could be a decent gauge as to what stage Charlie is at in his career as he comes up against the likes of Hondouras international Hendry Thomas – given that The Latics play a full strength team.
