Keith Southern has penned a new contract at Bloomfield Road, which could see him patrol the Blackpool midfield until 2012.

The 27-year-old, who has notched up over 250 appearances for The Seasiders, is almost always the first name on the team sheet, and has been since joining the club from Everton back in 2002.

And a two year deal, with the option of a third on top of that, is just reward for ‘Gnasher’s’ hard work and determination, who is a fans’ favourite with his no-nonsense approach and tough tackling.

One of only three players in the Blackpool squad to play in all of the bottom three divisions for the club (the others being Danny Coid and Brett Ormerod), Southern clearly holds the seaside close to his heart.

‘Blackpool has been a massive part of my life. I’ve been here for seven years now and I’ve had some really good times here, so I was happy to commit,’ said the Gateshead born man.

‘I’m delighted to have signed,’ he continued. ‘I’m glad to have got it out of the way and sorted so that I can look forward to the rest of the season and a couple more after that.

The news is yet more good PR for the club, and follows a string of first team regulars who are committing themselves to ‘Pool. Ian Evatt, Ben Burgess and Gary Taylor-Fletcher have all signed on the dotted line in recent weeks and it seems that their are some real positive steps being made behind the scenes.
