The Blackpool Gazette have revealed that Pool have offered a contract to 31 year old centre back Zak Whitbread in an attempt to add experience to their back line, with the ex Derby man rejecting the deal.

The defender is currently out of contract after leaving Derby County so is available on a free, however McDonald was unsuccessful in his first attempt at signing him and it’s unsure whether he’ll go back with another offer.

Whitbread has also played for Millwall, Norwich and Leicester before Derby so has plenty of experience in the football league as well as in the top division.

The early signs of securing a deal for Whitbread aren’t positive and he could well be attracting the interest of other League One clubs and possibly Championship clubs, McDonald will have to offer him an improved deal if he wants to sign the American born defender.

Whitbread would certainly be a good signing. He provides experience in a young defence and still has a lot to offer. Time will tell if a deal can be completed.
