The Labour leader of Blackpool Council, Councillor Simon Blackburn has apologised for labelling the Seasiders as ‘donkey botherers’.

The 37 year old made the comments on Facebook during Saturday’s 2-2 draw between Blackburn Rovers – the team Mr Blackburn supports – and Blackpool.

The status in full read: ‘Oh my actual God…the donkey-botherers are 2-0 up thanks to two of the worst refereeing decisions ever!’

Presumably Mr Blackburn had no complaints over the horrific string of decisions that led to Blackburn’s unjust and undeserved injury time equaliser…

Nevertheless, his comments have unsurprisingly attracted controversy, with some calling for him to resign.

However, Mr Blackburn has deemed the following apology to be sufficent:

‘I am hugely proud of Blackpool FC and their supporters, both of whom are a huge asset to the town and I apologise for any offence caused.

‘I hope and trust that there will be many more enjoyable meetings between Blackpool and Blackburn in the top flight and I’m horrified that my remarks may have caused offence.’

Whether his apology cuts the mustard or not will be seen during the council elections in May, and whilst Vital are not bothered either way, we do have one tip for Mr Blackburn: We might be ‘donkey botherers’, but at least we have a side capable of playing football… no wonder you have to resort to making ‘quips’ on Facebook during matches if you have to put up with that long ball rubbish every week!

As always, you can have your say on the matter on our forums.
