Ian Holloway got his tinkering right on Tuesday night when Blackpool thumped the ‘Boro, but he got it all wrong on Saturday as the Seasiders slumped to defeat against Ipswich.
Matt Gilks replaced Paul Rachubka in goal, whilst Neal Eardley replaced the injured Alex Baptiste in defence. In midfield, Keith Southern, Charlie Adam and Brett Ormerod were replaced by Al Banguara, Jason Euell and Hamuer Bouazza.
Roy Keane’s Ipswich are on a good run of late, and Saturday’s win finally sees them move out of the bottom three. At the other end of the table, Blackpool’s defeat meant that they slipped out of the playoff places.
The writing was on the wall for the travelling ‘Pool faithful as early as 31 seconds into the game when Jon Stead put the hosts infront from the edge of the area.
Ian Evatt then had a shot cleared off the line as the Seasiders looked to get back into the game immediately.
Ipswich were largely dominant however, with only Matt Gilks and the woodwork keeping the scoreline down.
A minute before the break though and the Tractor Boys had a deserved second. Jack Colback was released by Stead and fired home past Gilks.
‘Pool threw on Charlie Adam and Keith Southern in the second half as they looked to get back into the game.
With 20 minutes to go, they did get back into the game when Ian Evatt headed home Neal Eardley’s cross.
Five minutes later though it was game over as Gareth McAuley headed home Grant Leadbitter’s corner following some more suspect ‘Pool defending from a set piece.
Holloway then threw on Brett Ormerod for Hamuer Bouazza, but it was the hosts that came closest to scoring again; Jamie Peters blazing over from a great position.
With five minutes to go David Vaughan was sent off for a second bookable offence and will now miss Saturday’s game against West Brom. He becomes the first Seasider to receive their marching orders this season.
Ipswich had the last chance of the game; Jon Stead firing just wide.
