‘Pool Make Lowton Bid?

According to Ipswich Town website TWTD.co.uk tonight, Blackpool have made an offer of £300,000 for Sheffield United’s utility man Matt Lowton.

The 22 year old can play in a multitude of positions, including right back, centre half, defensive midfielder and right wing.

However, TWTD.co.uk also claim that the Seasiders face competition for the player from big spending Ipswich Town themselves, as the Tractor Boys look to rebuild their defence following the departure of Gareth McAuley to West Brom on a free transfer.

Lowton joined the Blades at just nine years old from Leeds United’s academy. In 2008 he had a loan spell at Sheffield FC, which was followed by a further loan spell with United’s Hungarian feeder team Ferencváros.

Since then he has begun to establish himself in the first team picture at Bramall Lane, last season racking up 32 apperances in the league scoring four goals as United were relegated from the Championship.

It is unknown whether ‘Pool were looking at the player before chief scout Billy Dearden left to join Danny Wilson’s new look managerial team in Yorkshire, but – if this report is true – it’s easy to see why we would be looking at him; he’s versatile, he’s young, he’s very pacey, and he’s very determined and not afraid to put himself about on the pitch despite his tender years.

Whether £300,000 would be enough to land Lowton remains to be seen though – he’s got another year on his contract with an option for a further year.
