Striker Lee Hughes has joined Blackpool on loan from Oldham Athletic until the end of the season.

The move comes in controversial circumstances given the striker’s past and rumours are circulating as to whether this loan spell is a trial for a contract when he is almost certain to leave The Latics.

Whilst playing for West Brom, Hughes was sent to prison in 2004 for death by dangerous driving, after his Mercedes collided with another car – killing a passenger and severely injuring the driver. He, along with his passenger, fled the scene.

Since his release from prison, Hughes has scored plenty of goals in League One for Oldham Athletic – 18 in 36 starts this campaign alone – but whether or not the Blackpool support can get over his past will be the key to his success at Bloomfield Road.
