When Ian Holloway took over this summer, Paul Rachubka was the undisputed number one and Matt Gilks was the undisputed number two.

In fact, Gilks wasn’t really rated by the majority of fans, myself included!

However, early on into the season, Gilks got a chance to snatch the number one jersey away from Rachubka, and boy has he taken that chance!

He’s now the undoubted number one at the club, and his performances have put him in contention for the player of the season awards.

Speaking to the Blackpool Gazette, Gilks paid tribute to manager Ian Holloway in his usual forthright manner:

‘I didn’t get an opportunity last season, but the more games I’ve played people have seen what I can actually do.

‘I don’t resent past managers. It is their decision, but I probably wasn’t given a fair crack of the whip and I suppose I do hold a slight grudge.

‘I had to keep going but I did let it affect me. I’m not going to lie and say it didn’t. It affected how I approached my football.

‘The lads are joking that I might get the ‘most improved player’ award. I take slight offence at that because I don’t think I’ve improved. I’ve just been given a chance and it’s the manager who is to thank for that.’

Has he done enough to win the Vital Player of the Season though? Find out later tonight!
